The World’s Most Famous Ocean Liner Company
Cunard Line was founded on 4 May 1839 by Sir Samuel Cunard, a Nova Scotian entrepreneur who secured the first transatlantic mail contract from the British Admiralty. The company’s inaugural voyage took place on 4 July 1840, when the paddle steamer RMS Britannia departed Liverpool for Halifax and Boston, marking the birth of scheduled transatlantic passenger service.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Cunard dominated the North Atlantic route, operating legendary vessels including the RMS Lusitania, RMS Mauretania (holder of the Blue Riband for 22 years), RMS Queen Mary, and RMS Queen Elizabeth — the largest passenger ship ever built at the time of her launch in 1938. These ships carried royalty, heads of state, film stars, and millions of emigrants across the Atlantic.
Today, Cunard operates four magnificent Queens: Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, and the newest addition, Queen Anne (launched 2024). The fleet sails to all seven continents, offering world cruises, grand voyages, and shorter luxury sailings. Cunard’s signature White Star Service — named in honour of the legendary standard of hospitality — ensures every guest receives impeccable, personalised attention throughout their voyage.
90,901 Gross Tons of Timeless Elegance
The MS Queen Elizabeth entered service on 12 October 2010, built by Fincantieri at the Monfalcone shipyard in Italy. She was named by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in a ceremony at Southampton. At 90,901 gross tons and 294 metres (964.5 feet) in length, she accommodates 2,081 guests and 1,000 crew members across 12 passenger decks.
Her interior design pays homage to the golden age of ocean travel, drawing inspiration from the original RMS Queen Elizabeth of 1940. The Grand Lobby features a sweeping staircase, Art Deco bronze sculptures, and hand-crafted marquetry panels. The Royal Court Theatre offers West End-calibre productions, while the Illuminations venue doubles as a planetarium — the only one at sea.
